Questions & Answers
How fit do you need to be for the 4 days Machu Picchu Tour?
A basic level of fitness is sufficient as you’ll primarily be taking buses and trains between locations, with the main physical activities being walking around archaeological sites and climbing stairs at Machu Picchu itself. The most challenging part is still dealing with the altitude (7,972 feet/2,430 meters at Machu Picchu) and walking on uneven stone surfaces.
The most strenuous day will be your visit to Machu Picchu, where you’ll spend 2-3 hours walking around the site, climbing stone steps, and navigating inclines. Being able to walk continuously for a couple of hours and climb several flights of stairs without getting winded should be adequate preparation. If you have problems with your knees or mobility issues, you may want to consider using a walking stick. The key is to take it slow, stay hydrated, and listen to your body, as the altitude can make even simple activities feel more challenging.
What's the best time of year to visit Machu Picchu?
The dry season (April to October) is considered the best time to visit, with clear skies and minimal rainfall. May to July are the most popular months, offering comfortable daytime temperatures around 70°F (21°C).
However, these months are also the busiest and most expensive. The wet season (November to March) has fewer tourists and lower prices, but expect afternoon showers and occasionally muddy conditions.
Should I book a guide or can I explore Machu Picchu independently?
A guide is mandatory for entering Machu Picchu itself as of 2019. However, the rest of your trip (visiting Cusco, Sacred Valley sites) can be done independently.
Most travelers opt for an organized tour package as it simplifies logistics with transportation, accommodations, and entrance tickets. If booking independently, remember that Machu Picchu tickets should be reserved several months in advance, especially during high season.
